Charity Never Faileth

In November of 2022, I was in Massachusetts spending time in my daily devotion. My father had asked me to see if I could put 1 Corinthians 13 to song to make it easier to remember, as he had just preached on the importance of reviewing that chapter each day to help us remember what true charity (love) is. As I was turning through the pages in my bible, I prayed for God to help me come up with a tune for this passage. I started meditating on the bible verses, and the Lord just opened it up for me. I just love the way the Lord works to help me create my songs.

This chapter is a lovely one to remember because it explains God’s love, charity that “never faileth” (1 Corinthians 13:8 KJV). This is the Love that Jesus had when he came to set us free from sin by dying on the cross. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. (John 3:16, 17 KJV) The Lord’s desire is for us to show His love to each other. “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.” (John 13:35 KJV). Praise the Lord for he is Love!

Lyrics

Verse 1

Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels,
and have not charity, I am become
as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
And though I have the gift of prophecy,
and understand all mysteries,
and all knowledge; and though I have all faith,
so that I could remove mountains,
and have not charity, I am nothing.
And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor,
and though I give my body to be burned,
and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.

Chorus

Charity suffereth long, and is kind;
charity envieth not;
charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,
Doth not behave itself unseemly,
seeketh not her own,
is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;
Rejoiceth not in iniquity,
but rejoiceth in the truth;
Beareth all things,
believeth all things,
hopeth all things,
endureth all things.
Charity never faileth.

Verse 2

But whether there be prophecies, they shall fail;
whether there be tongues, they shall cease;
whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
For we know in part,
and we prophesy in part.
But when that which is perfect is come,
then that which is in part shall be done away.
When I was a child, I spake as a child,
I understood as a child, I thought as a child:
but when I became a man,
I put away childish things.
For now we see through a glass, darkly;
but then face to face:
now I know in part;
but then shall I know even as also I am known.
Then shall I know,

Chorus

Charity suffereth long, and is kind;
charity envieth not;
charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,
Doth not behave itself unseemly,
seeketh not her own,
is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;
Rejoiceth not in iniquity,
but rejoiceth in the truth;
Beareth all things,
believeth all things,
hopeth all things,
endureth all things.
Charity never faileth.

Bridge

And now abideth
faith, hope, charity,
these three;
but the greatest of these is charity.
(then shall I know)

Ending

Charity suffereth long, and is kind;
charity envieth not;
charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,
Doth not be have itself unseemly,
seeketh not her own,
is not easily provoked,
thinketh no evil;
Rejoiceth not in iniquity,
but rejoiceth in the truth;
Beareth all things,
believeth all things,
hopeth all things,
endureth all things.
Charity never faileth.
